The Corona pandemic has serious consequences for tourism in Peruvian Cusco. Most of the companies associated with this sector suffered heavy losses. Of 4,371,787 visitors to the world-famous Inca citadel of Machu Picchu in 2019, only 591,900 arrived this year. According to the Regional Directorate of Foreign Trade Tourism (Dircetur), there are 19,187 registered providers of tourist services: Tourist guides, porters, agents, of which 17,652 have lost their jobs.
The revival of tourism will take time. The lifting of the quarantine and the resumption of air and land transport are no guarantee for the arrival of visitors to Cusco. Moreover, it is not certain that the 16 tourist sites and museums managed by the Committee of Integrated Cultural Tourism Services of Cusco (Cosituc) are ready to open their doors. Even this committee has run out of money, and to pay for services and personnel, employees were laid off during the pandemic.
