UROS AND TAQUILE
Puno • Floating Islands of the Uros • Taquile Island • Puno
1 D
The most popular activity in Puno is the visit of the floating Uros Tour South Peru Islands. The water taxi will take you past the Totora Reef Islands to the floating islands. Here you will be received by the president or the president of the island and gets explained the structure of the island and the structures of the indigenous tribal families. Everything you move on is made of reeds here. In addition to the primitive round dwellings of the families, there are now also the more modern rectangular forms of the houses. The modern era has also found its way into families. Next to or in front of each accommodation is a mast with a solar cell. This way, residents can now also use battery-operated lighting and, of course, operate radio or smaller televisions.
Once these islands were created by the ancestors of the Uros as protection against warlike conflicts. Whenever a threat arose, they then fled their boats to the islands to live for a time in the middle of Lake Titikaka, until the waves of conflict settled again.
Today, only a few hundred indigenous families live on the islands and their main source of income is of course tourism, but the history, the way of life and the islands are always an interesting excursion and worth a visit. The embroidery and loving crafts of the inhabitants look very colorful and the ceilings show, for example, the life cycle of the Uros.
The Island of Taquile
Among the tourists a multi-day visit to the two islands is very popular. You should plan an overnight stay with a local family as a supplement. Most of the time you spend on the larger island of Taquile, where you will be welcomed by a Peruvian host family. Although it is the same as the Uros, it is an interesting experience to make. You experience how people live on the spot – without electricity and other amenities that we use every day. So you will be e.g. also looking for a hot shower in vain. The families provide you with the typical einhemischen food. If you have the time and inclination then take this opportunity and then take in the fascinating sunset from the mountain in the middle of the island. Those are the moments that will be remembered for a long time.
